HPE Revolutionizes Enterprise with GreenLake for LLMs: A Cutting-Edge AI-as-a-Service Solution

**Hewlett Packard Enterprise Expands GreenLake with AI-as-a-Service and Supercomputer**

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has been a prominent player in delivering flexible consumption-based compute, storage, and networking to enterprise IT through its popular HPE GreenLake offerings. However, at its recent HPE Discover event in Las Vegas, HPE not only expanded its definition of GreenLake but also introduced a supercomputer and domain-specific AI applications as-a-service. This move positions HPE as a leader in enterprise digital transformation, setting it apart from its OEM peers who only provide traditional infrastructure solutions.

**The Rise of Generative AI in the Enterprise**

Generative AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, is revolutionizing various aspects of business operations, ranging from customer engagement to decision-making and marketing. However, IT organizations face two major challenges when adopting LLMs. Firstly, the complex and expensive IT infrastructure required to support LLM training, and secondly, the difficulty in customizing the LLM models to suit specific applications.

**HPE GreenLake for Large Language Models**

While several cloud services offer ChatGPT-as-a-Service, an enterprise-class consumption-based offering for LLMs has been missing. HPE addressed this gap with the introduction of HPE GreenLake for Large Language Models. This solution provides users with direct access to a pre-configured LLM stack running on a multi-tenant Cray XD supercomputer. HPE GreenLake for LLMs enables enterprises to train, tune, and deploy large-scale AI privately, eliminating concerns about the underlying platform. The infrastructure scales up to match the customers’ needs, making it almost like a supercomputer-as-a-service.

**The Aleph Alpha Luminous Model**

HPE collaborated with German-based AI company Aleph Alpha to offer users a pre-trained LLM called Luminous. This model allows organizations to leverage their data by training and fine-tuning a customized model, enhancing the LLM’s relevance and performance. The Luminous model is available in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

**Based on a Cray XD Supercomputer**

HPE GreenLake for LLMs is built on an unspecified Cray XD model, which is powered by the latest generation AMD EPYC processors and features eight NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs. The Cray XD-series supercomputers, renowned for their high performance and scalability, ensure uninterrupted data flow between nodes and storage devices during LLM training. HPE GreenLake’s utilization of industry-best technology, such as the NVIDIA H100 accelerator, further enhances its service quality.

**Fully Tuned AI Software Stack**

Configuring the software stack for LLMs is as complex as setting up the hardware infrastructure. HPE GreenLake for LLMs simplifies this process by including popular AI tools, frameworks, and the necessary NVIDIA software stack. Additionally, HPE’s proprietary Machine Learning Development Environment, Machine Learning Data Management Software, and HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric contribute to an optimized and efficient AI software stack.

**Analyst’s Take**

HPE’s GreenLake strategy, which offers private and hybrid-cloud capabilities supplemented with Flex Solutions for various workloads, demonstrates the company’s focus on delivering AI solutions. The introduction of GreenLake for LLMs is just the beginning, as HPE plans to expand its portfolio to include AI-as-a-Service offerings like climate modeling, drug discovery, and financial services. This transformation positions HPE as more than just a traditional infrastructure provider, blurring the lines between infrastructure and cloud services.

No other technology company currently offers a comparable solution to HPE’s expanded GreenLake offerings. With HPE GreenLake AI-as-a-Service, organizations can access flexible consumption-based infrastructure models that guarantee the scalability and performance required for AI and HPC workloads. As HPE continues to innovate, the future of GreenLake holds great promise.
