Research Shows ChatGPT Enhances the Excellence of Everyday Business Correspondence

**Generative AI Chatbots Improve Productivity and Quality in Writing Tasks, MIT Study Finds**

An MIT study has shown that using generative AI chatbots can significantly enhance productivity and quality in writing tasks such as emails or short reports. However, it’s important to note that the study did not consider fact-checking. This finding comes in the wake of a recent incident where generative AI chatbots produced an erroneous Star Wars article, raising concerns about the automation of complex writing. Nevertheless, the MIT study reveals that generative AI can be highly advantageous in routine communication tasks, increasing productivity by 40% and quality by 18%.

**Study Design**

The study, conducted by Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang from MIT, involved 453 participants who were college-educated individuals. These participants were assigned generalized writing tasks such as creating a press release, writing a company-wide email, or preparing a consulting report. Each person had to complete two assignments related to their specific field of expertise. The participants were recruited through Prolific, a platform that connects researchers with subjects, and all claimed previous experience in similar tasks. During the study, half of the participants were permitted to use ChatGPT, a generative AI chatbot, for their second assignment.

**Productivity and Quality Improvement**

The writing assignments were evaluated by industry professionals who used a scoring system to assess the quality of the participants’ work. Simultaneously, the participants’ completion times were recorded and financial incentives were given to encourage better performance. The study revealed a notable increase in both productivity and quality. It is not surprising that productivity improved, as generating a first draft at the click of a button is a time-saving tool. However, the unexpected finding was the increase in quality. The authors attribute this improvement to ChatGPT’s ability to produce well-crafted sentences suitable for simpler tasks.

**Study Limitations and Future Implications**

Despite the positive results, the authors acknowledged the limitations of the study. They deliberately selected tasks that did not require rigorous fact-checking due to budget and time constraints. Therefore, the study does not address the potential offset of gains in productivity when fact-checking is necessary. This poses a significant question about the usage of generative AI in more complex forms of writing. Nevertheless, the study sheds light on the promising potential of generative AI applications like ChatGPT, which could significantly impact the labor market.

**The Future of Work and AI**

Generative AI applications have recently garnered both excitement and concern about their future impact on work. Estimates from McKinsey suggest that generative AI could add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy through increased productivity. OpenAI even claims that 80% of jobs can incorporate generative AI capabilities. During the Hollywood writers’ strike, generative AI was a major topic of discussion in contract negotiations. Participants in the MIT study expressed excitement and concern about AI when surveyed two weeks after the experiment. Two months later, their likelihood of using chatbots in their jobs dropped by 20%. The authors explain that predicting macro trends as the technology proliferates remains difficult and uncertain.

**Conclusion**

The MIT study reveals the significant benefits of using generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT in routine writing tasks, increasing both productivity and quality. However, the study did not examine the impact of fact-checking, highlighting the need for further exploration before automating more complex forms of writing. As generative AI continues to advance, it is expected to revolutionize various industries and impact the future of work, although specific outcomes and implications remain uncertain.
