Pearl 2022: A Spectacular Prequel to X-Travagant

Ti West and Mia Goth shine in the prequel to the 2022 film “X” with “Pearl,” a Technicolor psychosexual horror that provides a fascinating glimpse into the origins of the notorious character. Directed by Ti West and starring Mia Goth as Pearl, the film takes viewers back to 1918 during the Spanish flu epidemic, where Pearl dreams of leaving her mundane life on the farm to become a star. The result is a nightmarish character study that is both tragic and horrifying, yet surprisingly funny.

“Pearl” is a film that adds depth and insight to the storyline of “X” while also standing on its own as a compelling piece of genre filmmaking. The movie cleverly weaves in existing themes from “X” while introducing new ones that set the stage for the third film in the trilogy, “Maxine.” Mirroring the eeriness of “The Wizard of Oz,” “Pearl” immerses viewers in a vivid and vibrant world, where Mia Goth’s captivating performance as both the innocent Pearl and the murderous character adds an extra layer of thematic significance.

The film delves into Pearl’s warped mind, providing an understanding and empathy for her character, despite her psychotically wrong actions. Mia Goth’s portrayal is a tour de force, showcasing her range as an actress and co-writer of the film. With its vivid visuals, intense acting, and compelling storyline, “Pearl” is a must-see for horror enthusiasts and fans of thought-provoking cinema.

In addition to Mia Goth’s exceptional performance, the film also boasts brilliant direction by Ti West, which commits to the Technicolor aesthetic and captures the essence of the 1918 setting. From the haunting score by Tyler Bates and Tim Williams to the seamless blend of themes, “Pearl” is a masterclass in genre filmmaking that continues to build anticipation for the conclusion of the trilogy with “Maxine.”

  1. I loved both movies, but Pearl really hit me hard. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised with just how much they identify with Pearl when she gives that monologue. It isn’t always about abuse, it could be a matter of the heart. Some people have had to choose between striking out on their own and sticking around to be supportive of a family riddled with mental health issues or struggling with poverty. It’s easy to dig out on someone you hate, not so easy when it’s someone you love. I wish Ti West would make a movie that challenges the notion that you have to make IT happen, whatever IT may be, when you’re young or else it’s too late. Maybe that’s true for pornos, but not for all things.

  2. I was actually surprised that i really didnt like this too much… it took two watches to grow on me but I quite liked x and i was so hype for this and anticipated it being more enjoyable. And for me it definitely was not. Very creative. Very well made. Love Mia’s acting. But it just didnt come together for me. A weak 6 out of 10. What really surprised me is you have pearl one of my highly anticipated movies letting me down, And then a few days later out of pure boredom I watch the invitation, which i thought was going to be pretty bad from the spoilerific trailer, expecting it to be a fun but mediocre way to pass the time and absolutely ended up loving it. Pearl definitely need wins in the creativity and technical filmmaking department, but the invitation definitely wins in the entertainment department for me.
