In 2021, Portugal has seen 7 unicorns achieving a combined valuation accounting for about 15% of the country’s GDP.

With leading universities like Nova University offering excellent support and programs like entrepreneurial education, Portugal has created an enabling environment for startups. According to Rudolfo, Portugal has come a long way since the early 2000s when there wasn’t much framework for entrepreneurship. Today, the country is fully focused on investing in talented founders in Europe that are working on science-based projects and deep tech. In fact, Portugal is now among the five best unicorn-creating countries in the world.

## Why Portugal is a specific and particular ecosystem for entrepreneurship

Apart from Portugal’s welcoming atmosphere with plenty of sun and great food, Carla points out that it’s the ecosystem’s growth that is truly impressive. Portugal has created favorable policies and regulations that promote the development of startups. Additionally, with over 150 incubators, Portugal is accelerating the growth of science-based startups and talented people coming out of universities. The country still has a long way to go, but it’s moving in the right direction.
