An Interview with Pierre Garnier from Jolt Capital on the 2022 Trends in the Semiconductor Industry

# What are the Latest Trends in the Semiconductor Industry for 2022?

In this video, Pierre Garnier, Managing Partner at Jolt Capital, shares his thoughts on the latest trends in the semiconductor industry for 2022. Garnier has over 30 years of experience in the space, with experience across large corporations and startups, including being the President at e2v semiconductors, a leading innovator of semiconductor devices.

## VC Funding and Innovation Trends in the Semiconductor Industry

When it comes to VC funding and innovation trends in the semiconductor industry, Garnier notes that there has been a real rebound in interest from the VC community to invest globally in deep tech, specifically in semiconductors. He attributes this to the pandemic creating supply chain issues globally and the recent Ukrainian crisis, which has highlighted the need to master control points within the electronics industry’s value chain, with semiconductor playing a critical role.

In terms of innovation, Garnier highlights the trend towards having more processing power and more bandwidth, implementing what has been known as the Moore’s and more law to combine different technology nodes and capabilities of the semiconductor on the same package. Advanced packaging, 3D ICs, and high-bandwidth memories are examples of where there is a lot of innovation coming in.

## Driving Industries and Growth Areas in the Global Semiconductor Market

Garnier notes that industries driving the growth of the global semiconductor market include high data computing, big data, data centers, AI computing engines, and chip-led concepts that aim to optimize each technology’s best function within the electronic systems.

From a VC funding perspective, Garnier highlights the US as the continent with the biggest investment in new technologies, startups, and VCs in an early stage. In Asia, Garnier differentiates between China and the rest of Asia, with China making huge investments but not as much in VC funding and innovation in startups. Garnier notes that Europe is still lacking enough PE and VC firms active in the semiconductor industry.

## Winning Semiconductors Startups

For startups developing the next generation of semiconductors, Garnier notes that a winning hand involves mastering yield and being able to measure and qualify it. Successful semiconductor companies can design products, processes, and products that have a good yield that generates good margins, making them profitable.
