  1. It's weird how this show is hyper-partisan, hyper-divisive, hyper-hateful of Repubs/Conservs, yet pretend they have none of those traits. They ❤ what their policies have done to San Francisco, which is the polar opposite of what the majority of society would support.

Hate this show, and these hosts 😃

  2. Thanks to Offline for putting this episode out there.

I do have a slight issue with what is being proposed here. I am a musician, my current occupation is container Management, community organizer, and help with my church's FB Live Service.

Let's say we all toss aside our smartphones. What would we do?
Use our laptops to do the same things.
Use emails on the laptop or tablet.
Take pictures with a camera, upload it to a computer, and then put it online.

Now to everyone's credit, when my friends and I hang out, we talk to one another and play Switch/music/ board or card games. Some Friday's I jam with other musicians and we end the evening with RoundRobin YouTube.

I do have an addiction to podcasts but I've never been into books although I've read 1,000s of articles.

  3. Can we get clarification that Jon’s screen time and pickups were just his iPhone and he didn’t have the setting turned on to combine the screen time stats of all of his devices logged into his icloud? If his kid is using an iPad logged into Jon’s icloud, it could be greatly skewing the data.

  4. I very much appreciate this episode and your honesty about your screen time etc. It made me look at my own screen time and pick ups a week and it was eye opening. I wonder if there is any organization working on an AA format for social media addiction? I noticed on my own usage that most of my usage are audio book apps or podcasts (which would be vastly different a year ago for me). I think your comments on the need to do this with a community is imperative so it makes me wonder about whether there is a format of AA for all of us addicted to our phones/tech/social media?

  6. Check out studying Buddhism for getting comfortable living in a way that you enjoy being alone with your thoughts. You don't have to shave your head and become a devotee to benefit from studying Buddhism and meditating. I found meditation impossible and frustrating before I studied Buddhist wisdom. Thank you for this wonderful discussion on smart phone addiction!

  7. I’m watching this podcast on YouTube on my iPhone 😄 The smart phone is a great tool that holds all of the useful items that we always used to use, for example, the basic use of talking to someone, for text/email instead of paper/envelope/post office letters, for logistics instead of a paper map, used in place of an encyclopedias/library, in place of magazines beside the toilet, in place of trash novels/tabloid newspapers/television soap operas. Uncontrollable scrolling is a problem and I do spend less time reading good books and writing, so I’d like to try controlling my evening scrolling.

  8. I have been wanting to switch back to a flip phone but afraid to leave google maps behind. I think the best tech era in my memory is when I had a pink razr flip phone in college (which I loved) and fb was only on the computer. Could also do Gchat on the computer. I just deleted fb, insta, twitter and Reddit off my phone inspired by you guys so we will see how that goes! At baseline I have notifications turned off for all apps except messages and gmail which helps a lot to avoid getting distracted by the phone. I could probably turn off gmail notifications too…

  9. The British sold Indian opium to the Chinese, and demanded payment in silver. With this silver they bought tea for the European market, which was very profitable at the time. This business had the double benefit of impoverishing the Indians and addicting the Chinese, thus weakening them. seems like TikTok addiction is a form of revenge on the West. The Chinese have very long memories. lol
